finally! a post!

hello hello!  so, every time i’ve tried to post for a long time now, my computer has completely shut down as soon as i start to type in the subject line.  very weird.  anyway, i’m on matt’s computer, since he’s home sick and i have nowhere i need to be yet.

news:  we bid on an apartment saturday.  and yesterday, someone put in a bid that we can’t possibly match.  or we could, but we’d be screwed when anything happened that needed repairing.  so we had to let it go.  bummer.  it was gorgeous.  the top floor of 3 buildings, on prinseneiland.  it had everything we wanted, including a full downstairs atelier for matt’s papermaking, which he plans to get pretty big and messy with as soon as he has adequate space to do it in.

oh well.  there will be others.

saturday night, which was matt’s birthday, we drove to waregem, belgium for a concert:  alien sex fiend!  i’m glad we went… i’ve wanted to see them for years, and we met lots of people there, but the show was actually pretty disappointing.  oh well.  it was still a great night.

espresso cart planning still moves along.  slowly.  i may have found a builder.  but i need to get a few more pieces of information for him.  and i’m going crazy trying to do espresso stuff and housing stuff at the same time.  i just need some downtime.  ugh.  wouldn’t i love another one of those stupid beach vacations like annemette and i took last january!  ha!  no time for one this year.  anyway, i have little more to say right now… just happy to have a chance to say it.

going to maastricht for the weekend.  things to do there.

Shitty Gray Day

Ugh.  I am sitting in an internet cafe between Muntplein and Spui.  This is my 2nd time here, but the guy acts as if we’re old friends.  Funny.  The guy at the place I usually go to recognizes me, but doesn’t make conversation.

This morning I had to wake up relatively early because I had an appointment to see an apartment on Amstel at 9:30, and before I went to that I wanted to try to email myself my newest version of my CV.  We don’t have internet yet at home, but Matt left his computer at home while he went to a training, and I can SOMETIMES get a wireless connection.  I got one this morning for barely enough time to get that CV on my email.  yay!

Went to the apartment.  Waited.  and some more.  The agent never showed up.  So I called him and left a grumpy message.  I haven’t heard back yet.  Then I tried to go to an internet cafe.  They were all closed.  All of them!  So I wandered and periodically went back to check on them… none opened.  So I wandered in the direction of my next house-viewing.  It was nice, but the agent was kind of bitchy.  Then I went to my next houseviewing, and NO SHOW AGAIN!!!  so when i called them, they told me that the appointment was at 3:15, not 1:15.  what can i say?  matt made that appointment, and wrote it down in my book.  and i had another one scheduled for 3, so i can’t do it.  so i rescheduled it for 3:45.  it’s going to be close.  anyway.  i have finally managed to email my CV off to that parttime desk job that will give me some money while I work on my espresso business stuff.  and now it’s nearly time to head off to my next appointment.  What a day.  I hope they show.  I’ve been looking forward to this one.  It’s on Spuistraat, and I like the place very much from the outside.  Well, I’m off.  tired of sitting here, and don’t want to look up things on the Kamer van Koophandel site today.  Ugh.  I don’t think I got enough sleep.

Tomorrow we’re going to Sweden for 4 days.  Bye!

internet booths and more…

well, i can see the albert cuypmarkt in front of me as i sit in this no-nonsense internet/telephone provider with 2 minutes remaining on the clock.

we are getting settled in here, and cat has done well with the move this time.  he’s very very relaxed, but needing a lot of cuddling.  no complaints there… usually he’s a bit stand-offish.

there are lots of restaurants near our temp apartment.  we ate at an indonesian one with matt’s brother morgan 2 nights ago.  delicious.  there are many japanese ones.  out of time!  smooch!

gack!

just got home from a run and occasional walk of 1hour with annemette.  was so thirsty, and poured myself a big glass of bubbly water.  decided sweet was good, so dumped a bunch of blackberry syrup into it.  swirled it with a straw and then drank about half of it in one big slurp.  then stirred the straw around again, looked at it, and….

full of little ant bodies!

dead, of course… long time, too.  matt had some ant troubles while i was in amsterdam this summer.

ick ick ick.  i don’t know how many i must have drunk.

🙂
natuurlijk, i poured out the rest of the bottle.  too bad.  i liked the blackberry.  it’s my favorite.  i’ve been drinking it in things for quite some time now.  …. imagine all the other ant bodies i’ve probably drunk already.  ewwww….

espresso and motorcycles

after my lesson yesterday, i went to see henk l. in den haag about my espresso business.  he was a wealth of information… definitely the man i should have talked to months ago.  on the other hand, would i have valued the information quite as much as i do now that i’ve had so much trouble finding it anywhere else?  back then, i might not have known just how helpful he is.  anyway, i have more of a direction now.  and a source for just about anything under the sun.

after seeing henk, i went to utrecht to have dinner and drinks with dick, and pick up the LETTER FROM zwier FROM TRIUMPH, telling the RDW (dutch DMV) what information to use to inspect my bike!  finally!!!!!  yay!

so, this morning, after my student, i went to the RDW.  unfortunately, it was too late to get in for the inspection without an appointment (they schedule you on a first come- first serve basis at 7:45 in the morning).  i expected it might be the case, but had to try.  anyway, the woman at the desk made me an appointment for next friday (the 17th), and if i don’t have a student on monday morning, i may also go in then for the non-appointment time.  i’m only doing this because i think it won’t pass the first time, but i’m not sure what it will need to pass, so i need time for 2 appointments before my insurance runs out.  craziness.

anyway, all this has me feeling pretty positive.  now i’ve got some organizing and sorting to do, then i’m running with annemette at 2, then later one of the moving companies is coming over to take a look at the job.  🙂  heh heh… little do they know…

another stress point lessened…

yay!  dick just called… he got the requested letter from the triumph guy here in nederland.  i can now go to the rdw and they can actually DO the inspection!!! yay!!!
so, now i just have to PASS it!  yay!  i’m not as worried about that… even if i don’t pass it, it will just be a matter of fixing whatever doesn’t pass and trying again.  getting it inspected in the first place was the problem!

i am feeling better and better.  🙂

temporary apartment found!!!

yay!  matt is on his way back from securing us our temporary apartment in amsterdam.  it is quite large, and mere minutes from amsterdam RAI train station.  it has a furnished guest bedroom, too!

basically, the idea was for us to have a furnished place we could live in while we hunt for a place to buy.  this place will be perfect.  the price was right, the size better than we could have hoped for, and the location fine.  i found it on the internet a couple of days ago, sent an email, and the owner got right back to me.  matt was going up for a dance party in amsterdam, so he also met with the owners.  yay!!!

so we’re set.  it’ll be ours from dec 1st to 25 march.  now there’s one less thing for me to stress about.  🙂

too many things…

hello… i am very busy. my head is going to explode. anyone who reads my lj probably reads matt’s lj, and thus you all know why: we just found out we are going to be in amsterdam by december 1st. what does this mean i’m up to. for starter’s, let’s see what i was already up to….

1.  lessons – my 4 students, my dutch lesson, and my violin lesson
2.  importing the motorcycle… still working on that.
3.  planning my espresso business.  this is a HUGE project.  i need contacts for a million and one things, most notably right now:  an accountant, someone who can convert vehicles to food use, and paper cup suppliers (where the hell are they????).
4.  preparing our halloween cocktail party (locals only, my apologies… it’s on tuesday and i’m not dealing with overnights)

and here’s the new stuff, related to the move…
1.  cancelling services:  phone, electric, gas, water, internet, post forwarding, etc.
2.  throwing out crap
3.  looking for a temporary apartment
4.  occasionally peeking at things to buy, although we are moving too soon to really worry about it.  might as well save that.
5.  planning my espresso business even faster, because if i get up to amsterdam and procrastinate any longer, it will never fucking happen.
6.   ummm…. i forget.   all i know is that i’m crazy busy every day, nothing ever seems “done”, and i can’t sleep.  last night i didn’t fall asleep until after 5 a.m.  damn.  tonight i’m taking one of the sleeping pills matt’s mom arranged for me during the last insane move.

no, i didn’t cut away the new stuff.. just the old stuff.  i don’t want to get too crazy about the damn cut-aways.  ugh.  bye.  i’m hungry.  can’t remember eating.

Douglas Coupland

how is it that Microserfs has sat on my bookshelf for all these years and i haven’t read it?  i was sure i’d read it, absolutely sure.  but today, amidst a fit of important work avoidance, i decided to reread it.  and i haven’t read it in the first place.  although it’s got many similar themes to what i’ve just finished reading in Life After God, which i picked up day before yesterday in a bookstore in utrecht.  even some exact quotes.

i will return to it momentarily.  first i am heading to the jamin, to pick up some chewy sour candies or whatever similar treat strikes my fancy.  mmmmm….

motorcycle, birthday party, etc…

well, i’ve just caught up on 2 weeks of lj posts…. i’ve even managed tiny comments in some of them, but wow!  it seems like everyone’s been having a very eventful past two weeks.  some good, some bad, some not sure yet.  it was good to feel like i’ve caught up a bit though.

so, i’ve also had an evenful last couple of weeks.

last weekend i went to brussels to see miko and get a facial.  i had a great time, and it was really nice to catch up!  driving in brussels sucks unless you already know the city, i’ve found.  damn tunnels.  damn complete lack of signage.  this was only my second trip into the city by motorcycle, and i was well and truly confounded.

then tuesday i went to utrecht to pick up my motorcycle, for which i finally had papers!  yay!  spent a nice afternoon and evening of driving around, by myself then with dick when he got off work.  it’s funny driving around in europe with american plates.  i keep expecting to be pulled over, but so far as i can tell, no one has even noticed that mine says minnesota on it.  heh heh.

friday i went to my cooking group’s first meeting of the new year (yes, i still and probably always will think of new years as beginning in the fall).  had a great time, got a bit tipsy, and was taken to a fantastic member’s only supermarket after by molly and jacques, where i was able to buy ice and a cooler for the party!!!

friday night, dick arrived for the weekend, and he and matt went to aikido while i did more small party prep.  then we all went out for drinks and pizza at pizza napoli, on the markt.

saturday we went on a long motorcycle ride here and there.  yay!  it was absolutely fantastic to ride through windy hills and villages on my own motorcycle finally.  when we got back we were all exhausted, so we attempted to nap before the party.

after the nap, my phone kept going off with people cancelling.  no big deal.  the people who showed up were plenty, and we had a great time.  we also had 4 people staying the night:  dick, ivo and marieke, and gea.

our friends here are an interesting mix.  now that we’ve been here for over 2 years, what’s weeded itself out has been a very dissimilar group of people.  if you look at the mere appearances of the people who came, you would perhaps wonder what they were all doing in the same room.  but they have something more important in common:  they are all really interesting, and most aren’t very shy.  so, they talk about what they have in common, which tends to be more than they expect, and what they don’t have in common, which they usually find pretty interesting, because they’re all really curious and open-minded.  this makes for good parties, in general.  not perhaps as active as would sometimes be nice, but certainly good conversations.

i made lots of margaritas, and everything pretty much wound up around 5 am.  part of me wanted to stay up later, but i was starting to get slightly crabby, which happens to me when i’m tired and trying to avoid the necessary sleeping.  yes, i’m like a toddler, so when matt said he was going to bed, i agreed and went too.  leaving a couple of people sitting there unsure of what to do next.  🙂  whoops!  dev and i have closed parties down on our own at least once, and he was one of the ones still sitting there with a beer in hand when i left.  uh oh.  i have ruined my previous image of able to stay up later than anyone!

notable highlights:  getting molly and jacques so happy for margaritas and new conversations that they stayed hours longer than they planned to, and left their teenage son george, who’d locked himself out, on the sidewalk for nearly an hour!  introducing sabrina, aurelie and olivier to laurent and claudia (claudia is actually italian) and having one of them (sabrina?) exclaim happily: oh! but you didn’t tell us this was going to be a french party!  aurelie and olivier are new-comers to our parties, and were looking a little shy until then.  seeing jane’s eyes light up when brenn and jimmy showed up, and watching her decide she also needs dreads.  this is fun because jane works in the corporate world, and it would be quite an adventure!  dancing to vnv nation in the livingroom and trying to talk peggy into just letting loose and dancing.  oh, hell… i can’t list every fun memory.

also fun was the great number of personal soap operas that may or may not have been going on.  🙂  i’m always glad when it’s not me.  i usually manage to make enough of my own!

oh, and minnesotans reading this:  remember how often i have forcibly ejected people from the kitchen at parties?  we have an open floor plan in this apartment, and the food was actually all across the room from the kitchen, but i kept having to eject people from the kitchen here, too.  even though mostly only laurent and i were mixing cocktails, which WERE in fact in the kitchen.

matt woke up around 11 the next early and made breakfast for all of us, which was lovely as usual. we sat around and enjoyed the weather on the terrace, while matt copied some of gea’s cds, which will be a vast improvement on our music collection.  gea drove home in the early afternoon.  ivo and marieke and dick and matt and i went for a walk around the town (there were some events going on, as usual), then ivo and klein (marieke) left in the early evening.  dick left in the late evening, and matt and i conked out.  i refused to speak dutch all day on sunday, although everyone who stayed overnight was dutch.  heh heh.  my birthday, my prerogative!  🙂  i don’t think anyone even noticed, actually, since i most always speak only english with friends.

today i’m not doing much.  i slept late, and have been cleaning, reading lj, doing laundry, and pampering myself with new bath products all day.  no plans this evening, but lots of plans through the rest of the week, which is great!  maybe i’ll go for a motorcycle ride later this evening, while matt’s at aikido.
