the element of surprise

A gas kiln, organic combustibles and fire

The Process

After a time-intensive creation process, my eyeball sculptures are fired to 1000C in a gas kiln, then removed at that temperature with tongs and moved to a pit of organic combustibles, where the unglazed parts are smoked black and cracking and sometimes metallic effects are born.

The Maker at Work

THE PRIMARY STUDIO IS A SMALL SHED IN MY GARDEN. THERE I THROW THE EYEBALLS AND OTHER FORMS, SCULPT THEIR LEGS AND ACCESSORIES, AND DECORATE MY DESIGNS. MOST OF MY INITIAL MAKING HAPPENS IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF THE YEAR, FOLLOWED BY A SEASON OF FIRING & FINISHING, A SEASON OF SELLING & MODIFYING, AND THEN A SEASON OF PLANNING AND EXPERIMENTING.
