rant of the day: book-reading

I read a lot of books.  Admittedly, my current preference has been for what I happily call “junk food” or “easy trash”:  the fantasy/historic fiction and supernatural romances that are easy enough to procure by the truckload, often have several sequels, and can be easily read in a few hours.

However, I also read a lot of other types of books.

Right now, I am reading:

  • a biography of Henry Miller, by Robert Ferguson, which was so kindly donated to my care by

  • a nobel prizewinning novel, A New Life, by Orhan Pamuk, which I picked up at the airport on my way to Istanbul last week
  • a compilation of short erotica
  • Geert Max’s Amsterdam, which i admit to seldom picking up lately, but which I am still reading
  • my new copies of Adbusters and the Economist, which have just come in the mail

I have just finished, in the past week:

  • Fat, by Rob Grant, a satirical novel about body image which i really enjoyed, and picked up at the airport on the way home from Istanbul
  • Maledicte, by Lane Robins, one of those aforementioned fantastical history/romances that i enjoy so much, which i meant to take on my trip to istanbul, but left in Dick’s car, when he dropped me off at the airport.

Most likely, I will slowly make my way through the rest of the biography.  I’m enjoying it very much, and have been reading just a tiny bit at a time, like eating marbled halva, which i adore and try never to eat very quickly, so i can taste every bit of it.  The nobel novel will probably be finished today.  The erotica gets read one short story at a time, but there are only a couple left, so i’ll move on to the next book of them which is already purchased an on the shelf.  I’ll probably read a bit more of Amsterdam every time I’m between books, since that has been the pattern so far.  The mags will join my bathroom collection until their replacements come.  And i’ll probably acquire a few more of my junk books in the next day or two, since i’ve run out.

the whole reason i’m discussing this is that i’ve always read a lot.  in 1st grade i was in a reading group by myself (not really a group then) because my mom had taught me the basics when i was 3, so i was kind of ahead, except for rather quickly another classmate or two.  in 3rd grade, i had read every book (probably long before the end) in the small library of ford’s prairie elementary.  in 6th grade, in an effort to find something i hadn’t read in the public library (there were no doubt lots, but you know … perception), i had checked out a (in my memory) gigantic tome, a translation in verse of homer’s iliad, which i skipped recesses to read, worrying my teacher.

and i know this is not quite normal.  but i guess i also don’t quite think it’s all that abnormal, since these types of stories aren’t too exceptional among my friends and acquaintances.  but then i read a passage like this:

“Henry read indiscriminately and widely during his adolescence; even so, one suspects him of exaggerating his precocity.  Excluding the field of sex, there is no area in which we are quite so free to lie as in boasting of our prowess as readers, and Henry took full advantage of the ultimate inscrutability of both the sex-life and the reading life in crating his myth of himself.  The tendency is evident in an interview he gave late in life to a French journalist in which he not only claimed to have read the Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu at the tender age of seventeen, but in doing so specifically asked his interviewer to be astonished: ‘In Brooklyn, I ask you!  It’s incredible.  Me reading Lao Tzu in the middle of that crazy family!’…”  (Chapter 2, section 7, p. 34.  Henry Miller: A Life, by Robert Ferguson)

first, yes… of course it’s easy to lie about what we’ve read and when.  it’s also easy to simply remember it incorrectly.  in my personal understanding of henry miller, i’m sure he’s done both.  but as to his claims, i don’t find them impossible at all.  i read the tao te ching the first time around the same age (maybe a little younger even), and then again as a philosophy major at university a few years later.  i’m sure that, as is very true about my reading of the iliad, by the way, i didn’t fully understand.  but that’s part of the joy of reading.  i don’t think you can be too young to understand something.  you’ll just understand different parts of it.  it may be that you aren’t even interested in what you understand, then later, come across it again, reread it, and understand other things, that you completely missed the first time.

hell, like watching clerks when it first came out.  the first 3 times i saw it, i saw new things each time to laugh about.  in that case, maybe part of the problem was that i might have been laughing too much the first time…. 🙂

anyway, i don’t think henry was asking for the interviewer to be astonished that he read it (although, hell, maybe he was), but more that he managed to do it in his circumstances.  and regardless of whether you believe henry’s version of his reality or not, his perception of it is what matters, and makes it astounding or not.

and i’m irritated that someone who writes and who is interested enough in writers and writing to have written a biography of anyone, would think it odd that people can be widely read at a young age.

in retrospect, i think i’d better make a cut with all that.  🙂

return to the chaos.

well,
when i get home and can upload my istanbul (and all old) photos, i’ll post about the trip.

but today was insane.  woke up with a pain in my back, that i think happened when manhandling my luggage yesterday.  damn, after 2 wonderful hammam experiences, to ruin all those massages that way really sucks.

got on my bicycle on way to work.  was nearly killed by a truck that decided to take a right turn without signalling or checking his blind spot.  i yelled really loud while trying to get out of the way, and he stopped.

then, got hit by a bicycle when both he and a car decided to ignore their little yield triangles and go right through me.  i had a choice of getting hit by the car or by the bicycle.  i chose the bicycle.  it hurt, but not too badly, and i got to enjoy yelling at both of them for their illegal and dangerous behavior.  rather wish i’d yelled even more.

got to work to find a disaster area.  turns out that of my 3 full-time colleagues, 1 (my boss): mother died, incorrectly booked flight to canada for funeral, leaving today, that i had to fix all the plans for (no problem, but time-consuming and rush). 2: had been in barcelona while i was gone, for a conference.  had bag stolen with EVERYTHING in it, big fight with boyfriend and boss and best friend/colleague, and just got in late late last night.  3: sick at home, after having a hell week dealing with all the problems that had gone on during past 4 days.

my temp replacement had been forced to deal with all this in my absence, and done a pretty damn good job, from all evidence, but wow…. there is a lot here to fix up.  so i’ve been working my ass off all day.

now, it’s the birthday of both those afore-mentioned colleagues, and they’ve managed to make up, reschedule their cancelled birthday party, and even somewhat patch things up with the one’s boyfriend.

matt and i HAD planned a relaxing night at home with season 2 of Rome, but…  much crying ensued when i said i wasn’t sure i’d be able to make it… so i think i’ll try to show up at the “party”, at least for a little while.

holy shit.  i actually feel better about my not-so-wonderful morning, after all that drama!

frustration.

argh.  have been INSANELY busy at work lately.  in addition to all my normal work, my boss has been forwarding me all these industry newsletters to read through, print out relevant articles, and add to our ongoing research library and indexes.  we’ve been a bit crazy with other things, so these had gotten rather backed up.  i’d double-checked with my colleague, who used to be in charge of these things, to make sure i had the task right.  she confirmed it, and thanked me for taking care of it, since she’s been overwhelmed with other stuff lately.

yesterday, i spent ALL day working on it.  all day.  and wasn’t finished yet.  and got a bunch of new ones from my boss.

then, just a few minutes ago, she comes in to explain how she wants me to add some other things on.  i explained that i wasn’t sure i’d be able to, since right now the backup was insane… and i showed her what we have to do to accomplish this thing she’s asked for.
she said that it was ridiculous.  she recommended “another” way to do it.  i showed her that indeed, her “other” way was exactly what i had been doing.  she looked baffled.  said she couldn’t imagine that it should be taking so much effort to do it.  then she said that i shouldn’t do it; that my colleague should do it.  i said that my colleague had too much on her plate already, which is why it had been delegated to me.  she said in that case, i should scrap the whole project.

the whole project.

not that i’m attached, just that’s a lot of work i did yesterday, that she even wants me to throw out.  really.  she said she’d go through it tomorrow and see if there’s any reason to keep any of it, and otherwise throw the whole thing out.

i asked her what she wants me to do with all the newsletters she’s STILL forwarding to me.  she said … um, keep them in your inbox until we sort out what to do with them.

that’ll be never.

anyway, i decided to subject my colleagues to my visit to combichrist’s myspace page for a little musical therapy.  for me.  🙂  it was lovely.  in a … you know… not very lovely way.  🙂

Summer Darkness/ HEX

well, a comment on matt’s post (

).  on friday 8 february, we will be going to Summer Darkness – Winter Edition http://www.summerdarkness.nl/.  We believe that there are some scots and others coming to town for this.  if anyone needs a place to crash, we are an easy train ride from utrecht (20min, trains all night).  saturday i’d like to go to hex http://www.enfant-terrible.nl/hex/eng/playlistspictures.html.  it’s also very cool, if anyone is staying longer and wants to join.

🙂  see you soon!

the weekend in review

Friday:  Matt “worked from home”, so we also went to see 2 apartments for sale.  They were really nice, but didn’t grab me.  They grabbed Matt a bit, but I had good arguments against them.  🙂  heh heh.

Saturday:  The Party!  It was GREAT (my opinion)!  Big thanks to everyone who showed up!  Everyone brought excellent things to mix up, both liquors and mixers, and I had a lot of fun making up drinks and trying things from my 2 lovely cocktail books.  🙂  I don’t know how many people came, altogether, but at one point, both the living room and the tent were FILLED with people, and a fire was going with a couple of hardy souls around it.

Also a HUMONGOUS thanks to everyone who helped or served the role of “minion” throughout the evening.  That includes the dish-washing, cleanup, cocktail waitressing, refill coffee-making, decorating, etc etc etc that so many people helped with!

The rain didn’t put us off too much (thank goodness for large rental tents), but we later had trouble with wind!!!  End result:  fishing the tent out of the Ij in the morning.  Had to call the police for help.  🙂  The rental company has picked up the tent already, and they’ll let us know how the insurance thing works out.  At least it was clearly weather-related… that’s a standard coverage on rental equipment.

Sunday:  Tent/Ij (see above), then buttermilk pancakes for our wonderful overnight guests/ hard workers.  Then Matt, Dick and I went to look at a house for sale at the end of Overtoom.  It was so wonderful we’re going for a second viewing tomorrow, to ask more questions, check more details, and possibly make a bid!!!!

The rest of the evening was spent discussing house financing, our friend Steen’s possible interest in our plan, and then CLEANING CLEANING CLEANING.   And watching FIERCE, a movie matt got from Dev and Sofia for his birthday… thumbs up for fun!  Also, Henry Rollins was in it!

Oh, Henry Rollins is at Paradiso on Wednesday… we may go, if Matt is back from Sweden in time and tickets aren’t sold out.

updating on matt’s birthday bash!

it looks like they’re be plenty of rain tomorrow, so it’s a really good thing i’ve rented a large party tent for the pier.  🙂  i called a little while ago to confirm that it is indeed coming, since i’ve been having some troubles with orders and deliveries in general lately.

so, it’s still on, and that’s excellent.  and we’ll also have a terrace warmer, and hopefully we can get a fire going too (but in the other half of the garden, not in the tent!)

the Cocktail Fu bar will be fun (for me at least!!), and for the first time in maybe 4 years, there’ll be a birthday bat.  you minnesotans may remember what that is, but the people here won’t yet have seen it.  we made it the first year we were in maastricht, but it didn’t go over well, partially because i had to improvise some of the ingredients, and partially because the people at that party were mostly colleagues and dutch lesson classmates, and didn’t really understand the fun of black frosting.  🙂  anyway, i’ve got all the right ingredients, and will be making it shortly.

i’ve been making lots of ice-cubes, but if you live in amsterdam and/or don’t have a long route to get here, perhaps you can bring some too!  it never hurts to have more ice at a cocktail party.  🙂  i wish i could find a place to buy it by the bag.  i know sligro has it, but i haven’t got a membership!
